    BIOGRAPHY AND RESEARCH INTEREST

    BIOGRAPHY

He was interested in studying the genetic effect on heavy metal toxicokinetics after exposure in the environment and the workplace. His research was dedicated to answering questions regarding how hereditary hemochromatosis affects manganese neurotoxicity after gastric or pulmonary exposure. To answer these questions, my project involves several levels of research including: First, delivering the dosing solution of heavy metals to the target organ such as blood, by IV injection, or lungs, by lung aspiration. Second, studying the kinetic changes by sampling the blood from the cheek of the animal at several time points. Third, measurement of protein levels in tissues, measurement metal levels in different organs including dissected brain regions and measurement biochemical changes because of metal accumulation in the tissues. Lastly, measurement of changes in animal behavior that can be affected by metal exposure.

Another part of his research included mathematical models that quantitatively describe the biological interactions of small molecules with complex diseases such as cancer and neurotoxicity. These models not only provide the mechanism of actions of the pharmacological/toxicological systems, but also suggest new therapeutic plans to improve the outcomes of treatment interventions in such critical diseases.
